At the Institute for the Advancement of Legal and Ethical AI (“ALEA Institute”), we’re researching and communicating about legal and ethical AI systems. If you are an ALEA Institute partner and we have signed any additional agreements, then you should review those terms and any related notice or consent forms.

This Website Privacy Notice describes how the ALEA Institute collects, uses, and shares information when you use this website or any related domains (“site”, “website”). This notice does not necessarily cover the privacy practices of any other projects or services provided by the ALEA Institute.

2. What information does ALEA Institute collect?

In general, we limit our collection of information. Here’s what we collect:

A. Browser Information

By visiting this site, your browser sends basic information to our servers as part of a normal HTTP(S) request, including your IP address, browser user agent, and other HTTP headers. We use this information for two purposes:

• Security and Availability: To address information security or availability issues, such as Denial of Service (DoS) or unauthorized access attempts (“hacking”).

• Internal Analysis: To understand and improve trends related to our content, e.g., “which posts are most popular?,” we use Plausible for our website analytics on our site. Plausible provides privacy-focused analytics in a way that respects users; Plausible does not collect IP addresses or use cookies.

If you submit information via our Google contact forms or to us directly, we will collect contact information or any other information you enter.

We use this information to contact you or take action based on the information or request you provide.

C. Marketing Information

3. Do you share my information with third parties?

We do not sell, trade, share or transfer your personal information to third parties except in the circumstances described below.

A. Service Providers

We use third-party service providers to host our website and provide website analytics. The following service providers may process information on our behalf:

• Amazon Web Services: website hosting

• Google Workspace: contact forms and communication

• Plausible: privacy-friendly web analytics

We may share your personal information when required to do so by law or if we have a good faith belief that disclosure of such information is reasonably necessary to:

(a) satisfy any applicable law, regulation, legal process or enforceable governmental request, including those outside of your country of residence;

(b) enforce our contractual terms, including investigation of potential violations thereof;

(d) allow us to limit the damages we may sustain or to pursue available remedies.

We may share your personal information with a third party with your consent.

E. Aggregate Information

We may also share highly-aggregated, non-identifying information with the public or third parties for any reason; for example, to report on trends about interest in our research or the number of visitors to our website.

We don’t.

5. What rights do I have?

You should know that you do have the right to opt out of all marketing communications from us. You can do this by unsubscribing from our mailing list. You can also contact us at hello@aleainstitute.ai.

6. Children Under Age 13

We do not intend for children under the age of 13 to visit our site or submit personal information to us. Children under 13 may send any personal information about themselves. If we discover that we have collected personally identifying information about children under 13, we will delete that information. If you are the parent or legal guardian of a child under 13 for whom you believe we have personal information from or about, please contact us using one of the methods listed on this page.

We reserve the right to change this Website Privacy Notice at any time. If we make changes, we will provide you with notice of such change and will indicate on this page the new effective date.
